Rise. Lay the pair flat and measure from the crotch seam straight up to the top of the waistband. Under 9 inches sits low, 9 to 10.5 is a mid rise, 11 and above is high.
Waistband. Look at the closure: a button and zip, an elastic band all the way round, or elastic only across the back.
Pockets. Put a hand in each one. A pocket that is stitched shut or has no bag behind it is decorative, however real the topstitching looks.
