Inseam for tall women: what 5′9″ and up should look for

Key takeaways

  • Around 32 inches at 5 foot 9; add roughly half an inch per inch of height above that.
  • Regular lengths run out at about 32 inches. Tall ranges run 33 to 35.
  • A tall block lengthens the rise too; a regular pair with a long inseam still sits low.
  • Measure a pair that fits rather than your leg.

The number by height

A full-length inseam sits at roughly 45 percent of height. At 5 foot 9 inches that is about 32 inches with a flat shoe. Each inch of height above that adds close to half an inch of inseam, so 5 foot 11 lands near 33 and 6 foot 1 near 34. A low heel adds an inch to any of these. Where you like the hem to land moves it by an inch either way.

Where regular length stops

A regular inseam usually runs 30 to 32 inches. At 5 foot 9 with a flat shoe the top of that range just works; with a heel, or at any height above, it does not. This is why tall women describe regular pants as cropped: they are, by an inch or two. Tall ranges usually run 33 to 35 inches and exist precisely for the heights where regular runs out.

Tall changes the rise as well

A properly drafted tall block does not only add inseam. It lengthens the front and back rise and moves the knee shaping down, so the crotch sits where your crotch sits and the knee lands on your knee. A regular pair in a long inseam - some brands offer these - keeps the regular rise, which on a long torso sits below the natural waist and slides. Compare the front rise between the regular and tall chart to see whether the block was redrafted or just lengthened.

Measure a pair, not a leg

Lay a pair whose length you like flat, straighten the inner seam and measure from the crotch seam to the hem. That is your inseam. Measuring your own leg means guessing where the crotch seam sits, and on a long leg the guess is often an inch or more out.

What we publish

Every product page shows whether a tall range exists and the inseam per size where the brand publishes it. Filter the product list for tall availability. Where a brand publishes only a regular length, the page says so rather than suggesting a tall length exists.

Frequently asked questions

What inseam is tall?
Tall ranges usually run 33 to 35 inches, cut for heights where the regular 30 to 32 inch range runs out - roughly 5 foot 9 inches and above.
What inseam do I need at 5 foot 10?
Around 32 to 33 inches with a flat shoe, using the rule of roughly 45 percent of height, and an inch more with a low heel.
Why do long-inseam regular jeans still sit low on me?
Because the rise was not lengthened with the inseam. A tall block lengthens the rise too; a regular pair in a long length keeps the regular rise, which sits below a long torso’s natural waist.
