How to measure your waist for pants
Key takeaways
- The natural waist is the narrowest point, not where your pants sit.
- Level tape, flat but not tight, breathing normally.
- Measure the hip too, 7 to 9 inches below the waist; the waist alone cannot size a pair.
- If the waistband sits below your natural waist, measure there as well and compare both to the chart.
Find the natural waist
Stand normally and bend to one side. The crease that forms is your natural waist, the narrowest point of the torso, usually a little above the navel. That is where a size chart’s waist measurement is taken, whether or not the pants you are buying will sit there. If you measure where your current pants sit instead, you are measuring the pants, not you, and the chart will not know what to do with it.
Take the measurement
Wrap the tape around the natural waist, level all the way round. Check in a mirror: a tape that dips at the back reads an inch small. Keep it flat against the skin but do not pull; you should be able to slide a finger under it. Breathe normally and read the number at the end of an exhale. Write it down.
Measure the hip as well
The waist number alone cannot size a pair of pants, because the pair has to go over your hip first. Measure the fullest point of your hip and seat, usually 7 to 9 inches below the natural waist, with the tape parallel to the floor. If you carry weight at the upper thigh, take a second measurement 2 inches lower and use whichever is larger. Feet together for this one.

If the pants will sit lower
A mid rise of roughly 9 to 10.5 inches sits at the natural waist on most bodies. A lower rise sits below it, on a wider part of you. If you are buying a lower rise, measure at that height as well and compare that number to the chart’s waist, because the chart is describing the waistband, and the waistband will sit there. Two waist numbers, clearly labelled, are more useful than one.

Common mistakes
Measuring over clothes adds an inch. Pulling the tape tight takes one off, and you will feel it the first time you sit. Holding your breath in makes every pair too small by evening. Measuring where your favourite pants sit rather than at the natural waist gives you a number the chart cannot use. Measure once, properly, and the number will be right for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
- Where exactly is the natural waist?
- The narrowest point of your torso, usually a little above the navel. Bend to one side and the crease that forms is it.
- Should I measure my waist tight or loose?
- Flat against the skin but not pulled: you should be able to slide a finger under the tape. Breathe normally and read at the end of an exhale.
- Do I need to measure my hip too?
- Yes. The pair has to go over your hip before the waist matters. Measure the fullest point, usually 7 to 9 inches below the natural waist, with the tape level.
