What front rise means, and how to use it

Key takeaways

  • Front rise is measured on the garment, flat, from crotch seam to waistband top.
  • Mid rise is roughly 9 to 10.5 inches; high rise is roughly 11 inches and up.
  • Whether a rise suits you depends on torso length, not height.
  • Sitting adds one to two inches to most waist measurements, so test a rise seated.

Where the measurement is taken

Lay the garment flat, front side up. Put the tape at the point where the crotch seams meet and run it straight up to the top edge of the waistband. That single number tells you more about how a pair will feel than the size on the label does.

What the numbers translate to

On most women’s blocks a front rise near 9 to 10.5 inches sits at or just below the navel and reads as a mid rise. From about 11 inches upward the waistband sits at the natural waist or above it. Below 9 inches you are into low rise, which needs a hip shelf to stay put.

Matching rise to your torso

A short torso runs out of room first: a front rise above about 11 inches often presses into the ribs when you sit down. A long torso has the opposite problem, and a mid rise slides down through the day because there is more distance between waist and hip for it to travel. Height is a poor predictor of either.

The seated test

Waist measurement increases by one to two inches for most people when seated, and the rise is where that shows. Put the pants on, sit down, and try to slide a finger between the waistband and your body. If you cannot, the rise and the waist are working against you together, and a wider knit band will help more than the next size up.

Frequently asked questions

What front rise counts as high waisted?
Roughly 11 inches and above on most women’s blocks. Between about 9 and 10.5 inches is a mid rise. Brands label inconsistently, so the measurement is more reliable than the word.
Is front rise the same as rise?
Rise on its own usually means front rise, but a size chart that lists both front rise and back rise is telling you more: the difference between them is how much the pattern accommodates sitting.
Why does a high rise hurt my ribs?
Because your torso is shorter than the block assumes. The waistband has nowhere to sit except against the lower ribs, and sitting down pushes it up further.
